Combining decision procedures for the reals

چکیده
We address the general problem of determining the validity of boolean combinations of equalities and inequalities between real-valued expressions. In particular, we consider methods of establishing such assertions using only restricted forms of distributivity. At the same time, we explore ways in which “local” decision or heuristic procedures for fragments of the theory of the reals can be amalgamated into global ones. Let Tadd [Q] be the first-order theory of the real numbers in the language with symbols 0, 1,+,−, <, . . . , fa, . . . where for each a ∈ Q, fa denotes the function fa(x) = ax. Let Tmult [Q] be the analogous theory for the language with symbols 0, 1,×,÷, <, . . . , fa, . . .. We show that although T [Q] = Tadd [Q] ∪ Tmult [Q] is undecidable, the universal fragment of T [Q] is decidable. We also show that terms of T [Q] can fruitfully be put in a normal form. We prove analogous results for theories in which Q is replaced, more generally, by suitable subfields F of the reals. Finally, we consider practical methods of establishing quantifier-free validities that approximate our (impractical) decidability results.

δ-Complete Decision Procedures for Satisfiability over the Reals
We introduce the notion of “δ-complete decision procedures” for solving SMT problems over the real numbers, with the aim of handling a wide range of nonlinear functions including transcendental functions and solutions of Lipschitz-continuous ODEs. Given an SMT problem φ and a positive rational number δ, a δ-complete decision procedure determines either that φ is unsatisfiable, or that the “δ-we...

Linear numerical constraints and their first-order theory, whether defined over the reals or the integers, are basic tools that appear in many areas of Computer Science. This paper overviews a set of techniques based on finite automata that lead to decision procedures and other useful algorithms, as well as to a normal form, for the first-order linear theory of the integers, of the reals, and o...
متن کاملδ-Decidability over the Reals∗
Given any collection F of computable functions over the reals, we show that there exists an algorithm that, given any LF -sentence φ containing only bounded quantifiers, and any positive rational number δ, decides either “φ is true”, or “a δ-strengthening of φ is false”’. Under mild assumptions, for a C-computable signature F , the δ-decision problem for bounded Σk-sentences in LF resides in (Σ...
